A work in progress.....
The Archives team here in school are working to photograph and catalogue the myriad of cups and shields we have from Penrhos College, Rydal School and Rydal Penrhos, we have selected a few here to bring back memories of Speech days and Celebration Chapels…
Asking all the staff in school who are alumni the question - Did you ever win any of these ? We have received back the following information:
Lucy Davies, Head of Prep School (RS) did not win a cup but says she won the UVI Prizes for History and English – and chose DH Lawrence novels as her prize and found the guest speaker presenting the prize that year seemed slightly ruffled as she handed them to her!
Mark Sherrington, Head of Art (RS) won the boys' cup for the biggest contribution to school sport and says: “Still one of my proudest achievements! It was always the last cup to be given out and I still remember the excitement of waiting to hear who had won and then walking up to the top table in the old dining room to receive it."
Sean Kitchen, Teacher of Sport (RPS) also achieved a considerable amount during his time as a pupil, which he explains: "The first thing that springs to mind is winning the u18 and u16 Welsh Hockey Nationals in the same year. I think I was 15 (year 10) when I played in the games so that would have been 2011.
"We also won the Schools Six Nations 10s Rugby Plate in 2012 when I was in Year 11. That was a tournament with schools from England, Scotland, Ireland, France and Wales, with Rydal Penrhos being the Welsh representative. In 2014 we came runners up in this same competition but for the Cup - https://www.ukboardingschools.com/news/rydal-penrhos-flies-flag-wales-schools-six-nations/#.YCVFUS3fUgo.
"Finally, we also won the Cheshire 7s shield in my final year, 2014."
Debbie McCluskey (RS) won the Sixth Form Geography Prize, (taught by Mr Leeder and Miss Frudd) and went on to work in Africa before heading to UCL to study Geography. But she tells us: “There was no cup or anything like that, and I have to be honest the prize I always really wanted was the Deportment Prize at Penrhos Junior for walking around the school very straight like I had a book on my head.”
Cups, shields, trophies are important, they form a very strong heritage and tradition for the school…you remember the day you received one with pride and sometimes surprise but always with joy and we wanted to tip a wink at them this month.
Here are just a few cups and trophies from Rydal School, Penrhos College, and Rydal Penrhos...
