Mrs Deborah McKinnel and Mr John Waszek
'Welcome to the Lent term's Rydal Penrhos Society Newsletter. As the world returns to something close to "normal" the world of Rydal Penrhos remains focused on our pupils – current and former. In regard to current pupils, as we fully resume sports and fixtures, curriculum trips, and outdoor education, acting, singing, and playing instruments, and formal examinations, we continue to ensure our children and young people remain safe, happy and thriving. Staff and pupils are embracing opportunities we perhaps might once have taken for granted and I thank them for their enthusiasm and resilience. We are thrilled that we have connected with so many former pupils during what has been such a difficult time. As the world has opened up we have been joined by several of you, coming in to school to visit and support our current pupil and staff community.' –Mr John Waszek
'I also am delighted to welcome you to this spring issue of the newsletter – the first since I took over the post of Chair of Governors. Our School is a community that encompasses not only the pupils learning here today, but also all those who have done so in the past, and I feel privileged to serve this community in my new position.
'History is a prevailing theme of this term’s issue, and yet here in school, history does not weigh heavily, but rather informs and guides our decisions in the present. In a time when current events can inspire fear and helplessness, it allows us to keep sight of our own values and to manage the terrific responsibility we take on in educating young people.
'All around the School site, it is beginning to feel more spring-like. There are buds and new leaves appearing on the trees, birdsong during the day. It is difficult at this time not to feel a sense of hope and excitement for the future.
'Fittingly, then, I am particularly delighted that the Donald Hughes Trust will be entering its next stage in the form of the Spring Campaign. Incredibly generous donations from our alumni community mean that the Trust has already raised £10,000 – and for this I can only say, thank you. This sum represents a tremendous start to the campaign and reflects the trust that you, our alumni, place in the enduring importance of a Rydal Penrhos education.
'In this issue, as ever, both Rydal and Penrhos make their presence known. I enjoyed reading Richard Wright’s memories of sailing at Rydal, featuring a dramatic episode in which he and a friend save a drowning man off Rhos point. Other highlights include a conversation with Suzi Derbyshire (PC 1982), Penrhos alumna and distinguished Emeritus Professor at the University of Queensland (QUT); an exploration of some of the School's stained glass windows; and, from the archives, the incredible recollections of a Penrhos alumna who lived in Paris during the German occupation.
'Happy reading and we look forward to seeing you in School soon.' –Ms Deborah McKinnel
