At Rydal Penrhos School
Rydal Penrhos Sixth Form provides:
Small class sizes and high teacher to pupil ratios:
Throughout the school we have a teacher to pupil ratio of 1 to 9. We have small classes but not so small that debate and discussion can’t take place. Our classes are a size that means each and every pupil is known to their teacher and teaching can be adapted therefore according to the ability and performance of each young person. If extension work is required to push a child further or support is required to enable a pupil to succeed in an area of study we are flexible and can adapt quickly and easily.
Excellent teaching:
Our teaching staff are always going above and beyond the call of duty here at Rydal Penrhos. They care deeply about the development and welfare of each pupil, and this is especially evident across our Sixth Form provision.
Thorough marking and progress monitoring:
Having a consistent marking and assessment process during Sixth Form studies enables our staff to identify areas of improvement and the strength of a pupil. This allows us to form a study plan to enhance their progression academically, which is a proven method of improving results.
Free iPad for every pupil:
We have introduced a free iPad and pen for every Sixth Form pupil. These are for use in school but also facilitate remote online learning in the event of a further lockdown.
24 face to face academic lessons weekly:
In Year 12, our Sixth Formers study 4 AS levels, and are taught by their specialist subject teachers for 24 lessons per week (We know the more face to face teaching time a young person gets the better their outcome) and so each week out of the 30 lesson timetable 6 lessons are given per subject.
In Year 13 some young people chose to drop one A Level (secure in the knowledge they have it as an AS and have UCAS points for it) and just continue with the 3, although many continue with all 4.
Supervised study:
In addition to academic lessons, our Sixth Form cohort also has 2 teacher supervised study sessions each week .
Wellbeing and Mental Health:
There is a strong tutor structure in the Sixth Form and a weekly PSHE lesson so that our young people always feel valued and supported. This is a time for developing independence and confidence but within a safe and nurturing environment.
Large choice of subjects:
We have a wide and varied A-level curriculum at Rydal Penrhos that caters to almost any potential career path. These options give our pupils a more in-depth avenue into what ignites their passion.
Following the Sixth Form Information evening a comprehensive subject handbook will become available.
University application lessons:
Preparing for University can be a daunting prospect, but this is a pressure we look to relieve considerably here at Rydal Penrhos. Starting in Year 12 we allocate curriculum time to the process and each week one lesson is dedicated to applications, the assessment process, and the best possible destinations, our Sixth Form group will be given every essential piece of information ahead of the next stage of their journey.
Extra academic clinics after school:
For those seeking more study time or assistance with their subjects, we have extra academic clinics after school hours. This will give each sixth former the chance to brush up on specific elements of their subjects and get even more time with our incredible teaching staff.
Extra-Curricular activities:
And last but not least we are known for our facilities, our sports, the incredible fitness gym, charity and community projects, CCF, D of E and social life. All essential to developing that rounded young person.
