Year 9 team thrive at inter-school challenge
Rydal Penrhos pupils thrived once again at this year’s STEM Olympics competition, where they faced off against top independent schools from Wales, Cheshire and the North West.
STEM education encompasses more than just science and mathematics. It fosters hands-on learning with practical applications, encouraging students to think creatively, project-manage different scenarios, and develop outside-the-box thinking.
The skills acquired through STEM education, such as problem-solving, real-time thinking, curiosity, leadership, and learning from mistakes, are essential for preparing students to excel in academic subjects and their future endeavours in higher education and the professional world.
This is something that Rydal Penrhos has been quick to recognise, with STEM becoming a central part of the curriculum over recent years. From Reception upwards, Prep pupils receive weekly STEM lessons that provide an ideal introduction to this important area of academia before pupils begin their time on the Senior campus.
Once pupils arrive in Year 7, Science and Maths account for nine lessons a week, or over a third of the timetable. Additionally, pupils enjoy three lessons of Computer Science and Design Technology. Outside of lesson time, pupils can explore their interest in these subjects further by taking part in STEM Club.
The STEM Olympics on Monday 15 May offered another chance for our talented mathematicians, scientists and engineers to put their knowledge to the test and challenge their understanding.
Led by a group of talented Year 9 scientists, including Billy Walsh-Stevens, Will Bertalot, Nestor Pento and Zack Jewell, the team competed in five challenges over the day that included forensic science, physics, coding, dissection, and engineering. The team truly excelled in the ‘rocket launch’ engineering challenge they were set, finishing third overall.
Their fifth-place finish in the overall competition, from a competitive field including some of the largest independent schools in the North West and Cheshire, is yet another testament to the incredible teaching our Science, Maths and Technology teachers delver day-in and day-out.
We extend our congratulations to the team on their fantastic success, and thank Mrs Rogers, who supervised the team. We would also like to express our gratitude to The Grange School for their generous hospitality and warm welcome.
Our Year 8 pupils will certainly be looking forward to having the chance to compete at next year’s event!
