Coronation Celebrations
in the Prep and Pre-School
Rydal Penrhos enjoyed a busy and memorable Coronation Week with a series of activities themed around the once-in-a-generation event.
At Rydal Penrhos, we very deliberately strive to make sure all pupils are aware of the fact that they are living through history. Between the unprecedented Covid-19 pandemic and the passing of HRH Queen Elizabeth II, the past few years have been filled with developments and events that will be written about for many years to come.
The coronation of HRH King Charles III is certainly one of these moments. All pupils at Rydal Penrhos, and most parents and staff, will have never seen another coronation in their lifetime. Perhaps because of this sense of novelty, there was a real buzz and feeling of anticipation around the school ahead of this momentous national occasion.
What many newer members of the Rydal Penrhos community might not realise is that Rydal Penrhos has a particular investment in this coronation and our new King. In the early 1980s, when he was Prince of Wales, King Charles III paid a visit to Penrhos College; an event that many of our alumni and former staff will remember keenly.
One way to make important moments in history memorable to pupils is to make them fun. That was something that Rydal Penrhos did in abundance on Coronaton Week. Prep and Pre-School pupils at the school celebrated the coronation of King Charles III with a series of themed activities that were both educational and fun.
Rydal Penrhos pupils participated in a teddy-bear picnic, various art activities, and a coronation-themed visit to Merton Place. The highlight of the week, however, was a special coronation assembly which included an exciting royal bingo.
Pre-School and Prep pupils had a fantastic time celebrating the coronation of King Charles III, and it was heart-warming to see the enthusiasm and excitement of the pupils as they learned about this important moment in history.
We hope you enjoy these snapshots of what our pupils got up to over the week!
In the Prep, the Coronation of King Charles III was an occasion that was celebrated with great pomp and circumstance.
Throughout the week, special assemblies were held to educate the students about the importance of leadership and responsibility.
In one assembly, Reverend Beamish’s dogs, Jet and Honey, donned crowns and helped the School Chaplain talk to pupils about the roles and responsibilities of leadership.
During Friday's Celebration Assembly, a fiercely contested royal bingo competition took place, which was led by Deputy Principal and Head of Prep and Pre-School, Mrs Davies. Visiting parents got to see the immense excitement as pupils matched their coronation-themed images with those pulled out of a hat by Mrs Davies. Pupils also sang impressive renditions of both Welsh and English national anthems.
Throughout the week, each year group also had their own unique activities planned for the occasion.
For example, Year 4 created collages and enjoyed coronation music. Meanwhile, Year 5 were tasked with designing crowns, with the winning design to be used in the upcoming Prep musical production, ‘Mystery at Magpie Manor’.
Last but not least, Year 1 and Year 2 had immense fun participating in a dress-up role play activity, which allowed them to experience a life of royalty, if only for a lesson or two!
Pre-School Merton Place Visit
Some wonderful and heart warming celebrations took place at Merton Place when Rydal Penrhos Pre-School pupils commemorated the coronation of King Charles III.
Pupils engaged in various activities such as singing songs, reading stories about the monarch, and even crafting crowns for the seniors.
We would like to thank Merton Place and its residents for graciously welcoming the children and sharing their special merchandise with Rydal Penrhos.
Such moments of togetherness and community create lasting memories that help foster strong bonds across generations.
Pre-School Teddy Bear Picnic
Ahead of the Coronation Weekend, Pre-School pupils made the most of the spring sunshine with a teddy bear picnic in their outdoor play area.
Adorned in creatively fashioned hats and waving Union Jack flags, the young pupils enjoyed a delightful spread of tasty food and, of course, their beloved teddy bears.
The festive atmosphere was infectious, and everyone was swept up in the spirit of the occasion.
It was a joyous celebration, with the children embracing the opportunity to have fun and learn at the same time.
