Diwrnod anhygoel am Blwyddyn 5 a 6!
St David's Day Parade
Rydal Penrhos Prep pupils in Year 5 and 6 joined with a number of local primary schools to participate in a St David's Day parade.
Marching from the familiar location of Queens' Gardens, which Costain and Old House overlook, Prep pupils filled Colwyn Bay with cheer as they waved to the hundreds of onlookers who gathered along the streets.
Following a path east along Conwy Road before descending Station Road and rounding their way up Sea View Road to St Paul's Church, pupils were at the head of a long parade, second only to the marching band and various dignitaries, including the Mayor of Colwyn Bay.
Walking alongside their teachers and Deputy Principal Mrs Davies, Prep pupils were adorned in a bright assortment of Welsh hats, scarves and red clothing. Carrying countless Ddraig Goch flags with them, pupils made sure that residents of the town knew exactly what day it was!
Upon reaching St Paul's Church, Prep pupils were warmly welcomed to a church service in which they participated alongside the many other schools present. As part of the service, children were reminded of St David's adage of ‘Gwnewch y pethau bychain’ ('Do the small things') and how this was an important lesson for life.
Capitalising on their practice, Prep pupils joined in the singing of ‘Calon Lan’ and later Dafydd Iwan's ‘Yma o Hyd’, which has been at the forefront of Welsh public consciousness following the Wales football squad's heroic efforts at the Qatar World Cup in December.
Following the service, Year 5 and 6 made their way to the Senior Dining Hall, where Welsh-themed refreshments had been prepared by Catering Manager Jonathan Stubbs and his fantastic team. There they were joined by Ysgol Pen-y-Bryn and Ysgol Nant-y-Groes, who also took part in the parade.
Buzzing from the morning's festivities and thoroughly enjoying the delicious Welsh cakes on offer, pupils from all three schools had a wonderful time taking a rest after a busy morning of parading across town.
On Friday, Rydal Penrhos received the following letter of thanks for its involvement in the event:
“I am writing on behalf of the Mayor Colin Matthews, and Members of the Town Council to express our thanks to the pupils of Rydal Penrhos for their enthusiastic participation at the St David’s Day Parade on Wednesday 1st March.”
“I would also like to offer an extra thank you for providing the school pupils and teachers with post event refreshments. I would be grateful if you would pass on our thanks to all pupils and staff concerned and very much hope to see you all again next year.”
We would like to thank the Mayor and Bay of Colwyn town councilors for their kind words. We also wish to take this opportunity to express our appreciation to all those involved in organising the event, and to thank Ysgol Pen-y-Bryn and Ysgol Nant-y-Groes for visiting and sharing some delicious Welsh snacks!
