Snow Day
Pupils across Rydal Penrhos revel in rare conditions
With the start of British Summer Time and the beginning of the Easter holidays, it is starting to feel as though the cold winter months are behind us and we can truly look forward to the wonders of spring.
In light of this, it is easy to forget that just three weeks ago, on Thursday 9 March, Rydal Penrhos was covered in snowfall as Colwyn Bay and North Wales enjoyed rare white-out weather.
Despite heavy flurries of snow more akin to the north of Scotland than North Wales, Rydal Penrhos remained open, unlike many other schools in the area, with the vast majority of pupils making it into school for a productive day of lessons and activities.
Huge congratulations for this impressive feat must go to our parents and school bus drivers, who successfully navigated the challenging conditions to deliver pupils into school from across North Wales, as far as Anglesey in the West and the English boarder in the East.
While the ordeal of driving through the snow might make snow days slightly less than ideal for parents, our pupils thoroughly enjoyed the extraordinary conditions, which brought a fresh sense of fun and novelty to their school day.
Whether it was making their way between lessons from snow-covered building to snow-covered building, shuffling out patterns in the snow with their footsteps or engaging in all-important and energetic snowball fights, pupils were keen not to waste the opportunity to experience anew their daily surroundings.
This was as true in the Senior School, where historic buildings such as Old House and Costain took on a new visage in the midst of the tundra, as it was in the Prep, where the Forest School had an almost fairy-tale quality as snow piled on the leaves above the log shelter and the disappearing dirt floor.
Mr McLeod's Year 4 class put their break time to good use as they donned their winter coats and hats and constructed a particularly tall snowman, who gazed out towards the coast as pupils played on the snowy terrain near the outdoor play area.
All in all the day was huge fun for our children and young people, which is a testament to the important role played by parents, teachers and staff in getting pupils into school and keeping them safe once they were there.
As we enter April, it may be some time before our next snow day, so until then, we will leave you with a gallery of some photos from the day.
