Open Day 2022
What to expect
Rydal Penrhos is delighted to be holding a special Open Day event on Friday 6 May 2022. This will give prospective pupils and their families a chance to tour the school, exploring for themselves the wealth of academic and extra-curricular opportunities on offer.
The Open Day will run from 9am-4pm at the school’s Pre-School, Prep and Senior sites, which continue to excel in providing an exceptional, well-balanced education that prepares each pupil for whatever they go on to achieve throughout higher education and the working world.
Upon arriving at Rydal Penrhos, visitors will be greeted by a member of staff who will take them around the school’s impressive campus, which has undergone some outstanding renovations over the last year to improve the safety and learning experience of pupils young and old.
Tour guides will be able to answer any questions people may have on the curriculum, examination success, extra-curricular options, the school’s outdoor education programme including the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme, the incredible performing arts provision on offer and how the school has adjusted to an ever-changing climate during recent COVID-19 restrictions to maintain progression across all areas.
Upon completing the tour, there will also be the chance to go through the admissions process and secure your place at Rydal Penrhos.
This is also a unique opportunity to see Rydal Penrhos in all its glory during a typical school day. Classrooms will be buzzing with activities to further enhance the experience for those in attendance.
John Waszek, Executive Principal of Rydal Penrhos, said: “Rydal Penrhos is a school of which we are immensely proud; our pupils are absolutely delightful, and they are ably and enthusiastically supported by a talented and committed staff.
“We seek to provide a safe and happy environment within which our pupils can thrive; this features outstanding pastoral care, excellent teaching and a powerful extra-curricular programme which is designed to enable each pupil to live his or her life to the full, both whilst at school and afterwards.”

Year 1
St John's Church visit delves deeper into Places of Worship
Getting out and about is a key part of the education provided at Rydal Penrhos.
This is something that is back in full swing across all year groups following a period of disruption due to COVID-19 restrictions, which has been welcome in pursuit of aiding the development of each pupil learning at the school.
Gaining new experiences outside of a typical classroom environment is essential for young learners. Especially for those just building the foundations for what is sure to be an exciting and enriching education at Rydal Penrhos.
Year 1 pupils have been spending time discovering more about Christian Places of Worship during their Religious Studies lessons with staff. This also included a special visit to St John’s Church, which is owned by the school and hosts major events such as Services and Concerts throughout the academic year.
Upon arriving at the church, pupils were greeted by the Reverend Dr Rob Beamish, Chaplain of Rydal Penrhos, who took time to discuss the importance of a Christian Church.
This was followed by a special treasure hunt around the building, which centred on identifying different features around the church and their purpose. Something that provoked thoughtful discussion and was thoroughly enjoyed.
Pupils were also amazed to find out that a church is constructed in the shape of a cross, even getting to view a detailed floor plan of St John’s and labelling where the internal features are located to round off a very useful visit.
We would like to thank pupils for their enthusiasm throughout the trip and to Rev’d Dr Beamish for delivering a fantastic session.
Cricket
Former pupil Owen takes five wickets at Lord's
A former pupil at Rydal Penrhos produced an exceptional performance for a nationally-recognised squad at one of the most storied grounds anywhere in the world.
Owen Reilly, who was part of the school’s cohort that secured historic A Level results in 2020, managed to boost his reputation as one of the brightest young talents in the country with another outstanding performance for a Cricket Wales select side in their recent encounter against Marylebone Cricket Club at Lord’s Cricket Ground.
The teenager, who was also the school’s First XI captain at Rydal Penrhos, produced another memorable bowling performance against high-quality opposition, securing five wickets for the loss of just 29 runs from a blistering spell that saw Owen go off the historic surface to a rousing ovation.
This is the latest in a series of outstanding accomplishments from Owen, who earned international honours with the Wales U18 squad during his time at Rydal Penrhos.
He currently turns out for North Wales Cricket League Premier Division side Bangor, where he won a championship in his first season with the team before COVID-19.
Owen arrived at Rydal Penrhos as a Year 12 pupil and wasted no time in making his presence felt in a sporting environment.
His performance during the school’s annual contest against Marylebone Cricket Club earned Owen the Spirit of Cricket Award, with his leadership during fixtures in his role as captain also coming in for significant praise.
The former pupil combined his cricket development (with the specialist coaching staff at Rydal Penrhos) alongside his studies and resulted in Owen securing his first-choice university destination (Cardiff Met), where he is studying Sports Conditioning, Rehabilitation and Massage Therapy.
Everyone at Rydal Penrhos would like to congratulate Owen on a fantastic achievement. It’s great to see his blossoming cricket career going from strength to strength.
Sailing
Freddie's season off to a flyer!
Sailing has been a huge part of life at Rydal Penrhos for more than 60 years.
The school is situated just a stone’s throw from the Colwyn Bay shoreline and has produced a plethora of international-calibre sailors over the years – many of whom go on to achieve exceptional things both in education and once they embark on new challenges.
Rydal Penrhos also offers sailing as part of the curriculum and the school’s Sailing and Water-Sports Centre is accredited by the Royal Yachting Association.
One pupil who has gone from strength to strength in recent years is Freddie MacLaverty, who joined as a Year 3 pupil back in 2015 and wasted no time in discovering his passion for all things sailing.
His exploits on the water have seen Freddie go on to attain some remarkable individual achievements, with one of the highlights seeing his partnership with Keira Luke attaining the U18 General Handicap Fleet crown at the British Youth Sailing Welsh Regional Championships.
Freddie worked exceptionally hard throughout the winter off-season period with the Welsh National ILCA/Laser 4.7 squad, building up core skills under the guidance of specialist coaches in readiness for a busy summer of competitive action across the country and beyond.
This stood Freddie in enormously good stead during qualifying races in pursuit of attaining a place in the Team GB youth squad for the World Championships in Portugal.
The latest event, which was held at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, featured 65 hopefuls from around the United Kingdom and saw Freddie turn in an exceptional performance to finish second in the U16 boys’ category and third overall.
Freddie recently followed this up with a sterling performance in the Welsh ILCA 6/Laser category at the RYA Youth Nationals (Under 21), finishing first overall thanks to a rousing effort following five hugely competitive days of racing at Pwllheli Sailing Club.
The school awarded Freddie a sports scholarship premium in 2020 in recognition of his exceptional commitment and impressive results on the national stage. This included a £500 contribution each year from Rydal Penrhos to further his talent.
Senior Prefects
Damisola and Bella get set for the next step
As our Year 13 Prefect team prepare to hand over their duties to focus on their upcoming exams, we asked two of our joint-Deputy Heads, Bella Rutherford and Damisola Animashaun, to offer their take on our theme of journeys.
Damisola Animashaun joined the school as a Year 9 pupil in 2017. Since his arrival, he has excelled both in and outside the classroom. He achieved an outstanding set of GCSE results including five Grade 9s, three A*s and a distinction in Additional Mathematics. A true all-rounder, Damisola has scored highly in challenges set by the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust, played for the school rugby team and performed on stage as part of the Speech and Drama Comedy Night. He was a member of the Rydal Penrhos team that won a prestigious Enterprise Challenge set by Lancaster University School of Management.
In his piece, Damisola reflects on the journey his year group, and the school at large, have faced over the recent past:
“As we approach the end of our Lent term, I am already looking ahead to the resumption of school and upcoming external exams in the Trinity Term; the first of many for our Year 11s and the final for myself and fellow Year 13s before embarking on a new chapter in higher education through university.
“Whilst students begin to enter a period of intense preparation and revision, this Easter Break should also represent a time of reflection for most year groups in the school. This is particularly pertinent for those in Year 13 as we reach a stage in our journey in Rydal Penrhos reminiscent of an end of an era, with a large majority of us having seen our adolescent years shaped by the school’s supportive community.
“After yet another academic year plagued by COVID restrictions, it’s been refreshing to see how the school’s spirit has remained strong, recently emphasised by the incredible support from pupils in the aid of those fleeing from Ukraine through a plethora of donations. Following another enriching half-term, a well-deserved break for students should ensure a great end to a challenging year across the whole school.”
Like Damisola, Bella Rutherford has consistently contributed to the life of the school since joining. Bella’s musical and dramatic performances will be remembered long after she leaves school this summer; the pupil has shone in a number of important roles for the Rydal Penrhos Dramatic Society, including a lead role in our recent Annie the Musical production. She has also achieved some impressive grading results in cello assessments from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music. Bella is a keen sailor and part of the school’s Peer Mentoring scheme, and will no doubt achieve great success in her exams this summer.
Bella reflects on her journey through Rydal Penrhos and the school’s impact on her life as she now looks out into adulthood:
“When people talk about journeys, I have always thought it sounded such as cliché. However, being asked to reflect on my own particular journey at Rydal Penrhos has given me a whole new appreciation for the word.
“I arrived at the then Lyndon Preparatory School in September 2007 as a very small, red curly haired girl and I write this now some 15 years later, albeit still a red head but now as a young woman on the verge of leaving the comfort blanket of Rydal Penrhos having gained a wealth of knowledge, skills and experiences to last a lifetime. The opportunities which have been offered to me over the years have given me skills for life. The opportunity to sail thanks to our prime position on the North Wales coast as well as skiing on the dry-slope in Llandudno since Reception have sent me far and wide competing in regattas and championships up and down the country, bringing home medals for the school and confidence in myself.
“Rydal Penrhos is a place where pupils can explore and find their potential. Our performing arts departments have provided an outlet for myself and many others over the years and have given opportunities to pupils up and down the school to perform on stage in the yearly productions, concerts and house competitions. The confidence gained from these experiences and seeing the benefits it has on others makes the months of rehearsal all worth it.
“From being in the school for such a stretch of time, I’ve seen it take on its own journey; changing headteachers, rebranding the Prep and making more sports kit changes than potentially any other school in the country!
"However, I wouldn’t have changed anything during my time in school. Rydal Penrhos equips its pupils and prepares them as they move on to new and bigger things, and for that I could not be more grateful. For me, I plan on taking a gap year and hope to find myself on a season in the Alps or yachting in the Caribbean this time next year before taking up my offer to study Business, Enterprise and Entrepreneurship at University, wherever that may be.”
Thank you to Bella and Damisola for sharing your thoughts with us. Everyone at Rydal Penrhos wishes you the very best of luck with your exams this summer.
Outdoor Education
Year 7 focus on water safety
Outdoor Education is important to us here at Rydal Penrhos and we are extremely fortunate to be situated just a stone’s throw away from the Colwyn Bay coastline. The school is also within a few miles of other prominent landmarks such as Snowdonia National Park and the Isle of Anglesey.
Being amid some outstanding surroundings is something the school takes full advantage of throughout the academic year. Trips and excursions regularly take place across all year groups and teaching staff also lend their expertise to an exceptional outdoor education provision that enables pupils to develop vital life skills away from the classroom.
Year 7 and 8 have specialist weekly outdoor education sessions that involve orienteering, abseiling, climbing and mountain walking, which often inspires pupils to become part of the school’s thriving Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme, which has gone from strength to strength all the way up to Year 13 and the prestigious Gold distinction.
It’s been a busy academic year for Year 7 so far, with pupils also participating in water safety sessions at the school’s 25-metre swimming pool, which are being led by Mr Phil Hilton – a qualified RLSS Pool Lifeguard instructor.
Pupils have been participating in activities centred on the Pool Lifeguard syllabus, which includes water safety, rescue techniques and the principles of rescue in water-based situations.
Other vital life skills that are being developed include how to safely deliver any casualties to the side of the pool and CPR techniques. This will serve the eager group well when they progress into the Combined Cadet Force or begin their journey within Rydal Penrhos’ thriving Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme.
A fantastic opportunity that Year 7 pupils are getting a significant amount out of. Well done to all for their outstanding application.
Martial Arts
Karate joy for Svaksh
Many of our pupils at Rydal Penrhos are busy gaining new skills and gaining a wide range of different experiences during activities and group involvement away from school. This is something our staff actively encourages and can further enhance their efforts in and out of the classroom.
One of the more popular activities is Martial Arts. A large number of pupils take up Karate from a very early age, with many going on to attain a prestigious Black Belt thanks to their extraordinary dedication.
Another pupil looking to follow in these footsteps is Svaksh Singham, who has been progressing extremely well through the various levels and is celebrating another significant milestone following another recent grading triumph.
Svaksh trains at the John Lynn’s Black Belt Martial Arts Academy in Colwyn Bay under the guidance of specialist coaches, with sessions designed to improve cognitive skills, improve confidence and discipline as well as communicate more efficiently and take on instructions for good measure.
The latest big test for Svaksh was his recent Brown Belt with Black Stripe grading under the watchful eye of adjudicators. Something that brought out the best in the Prep pupil once again with a flawless showing to pass the assessment with flying colours.
This is the latest in a series of exceptional results from Svaksh, who has already begun working on attaining further distinctions in the Martial Arts world in the not-too-distant future.
Everyone at Rydal Penrhos would like to congratulate Svaksh on another impressive grading performance. We look forward to hearing about further success in the future.
Mrs Lucy Davies
A learning journey
During the recent Rydal Penrhos Prep Spring Concert in the Memorial Hall, I had reason to visit the dressing rooms underneath the stage.
Some chairs needed moving about and I had forgotten that the width of the twisting staircase, to this somewhat underused area of the school, requires the nimbleness of a gymnastic cat!
All of the backstage areas are decorated with photographs and posters from former productions and plays and it was with a sense of impending historical doom that I found myself faced with the 1980s! I leant over my pile of chairs and squinted at a black and white photo of myself singing onstage to a number from ‘Oh! What a Lovely War!’
The mere fact that the photo was in black and white immediately resonated as to how long ago that was. I felt a little breathless, possibly caused by still holding onto the four stacked chairs, but more likely because sometimes we are jolted into thinking about our past and how moments connect to our present.
Since returning to Rydal Penrhos in 2019 I have had many moments when I am reminded of how strongly we are bonded to our school. I have met literally dozens of past pupils who are now parents at the school, or who work at the school, or, in some cases, are both.
Our strong Alumni society also encourages past pupils to visit the school for various events and reunions and I have been privileged to hear many stories about life at Rydal Penrhos over the decades.
So what is it about the school that marks it out as such an important part of every pupil’s life journey?
Why do so many former pupils find themselves returning to the North Wales area?
There are obvious reasons such as it’s a beautiful place, it has good commuter links and housing is cheaper than in London; but there must be something else. Something that binds us to the area and draws us back, even if only for holidays.
Thinking back through the many tales I have heard about life at Rydal School, Penrhos College, or Rydal Penrhos (yes, it’s been 22 years now!!), they all have one thing in common…
Teamwork!
I think our life journey is marked by how we work together with others and these are the moments that we remember most.
A pupil who attended the Prep School in the late 1950s, when it hadn’t been in its current building for very long, told me of his proudest moment. I was expecting a story of receiving the Maths Prize or of representing the school in rugby; this was not the case…
His proudest moment was pulling off the ‘chapel dare’! In those days the boys had morning chapel in what is now the Prep Library. There were no chairs and the boys were squashed in standing rows on the floorboards.
Famously one floorboard was loose; the idea was to lift up the floorboard at the start of the hymn, squeeze down into the cellar, run up the stairs into the playground and wave to your friends through the window before darting swiftly back into the cellar and back up into line without being noticed by any of the masters.
I stared at the gentlemen telling me this story, the picture of respectability and well into his 80s but able to remember with sheer joy the feeling of pulling off this great feat of daring.
I asked him what he thought he had learned most from being at the school, and he answered without hesitation…
“To have a go at everything and to learn that not everything goes to plan, always have a Plan B because Plan A might not have been the right one anyway!”
I didn’t dare to ask what Plan B had been if the floorboard had jammed or if he had been seen waving at the window!
Rydal Penrhos is certainly a school that gives every one of its pupils opportunities; and all pupils are encouraged to take these opportunities and try them, find out what they excel at and what they need help with, how to make their own Plan A and Plan B, and even a Plan C!
Learning to adapt, know our strengths and plan our next move are extremely important life lessons that so many of us were fortunate to receive whilst at school here. And if you find yourself carrying four chairs in a stuffy corridor remember to put them down and take a moment to reflect on the past experiences that led you to where you are now…learn to plan, change your plans and look forward to your next plan!
A good school teaches us so much more than academic subjects; through close bonds with our friends and staff, it teaches us to be brave, to try new things and to find out what it is truly possible to accomplish if we don’t give up!
