A message from the Society President
Guy Watson, Rydal Penrhos Society President (2014–15, 2019–) in his introduction reflects on his memorable journey with school.
“In September 1957 I began a journey which I am still travelling today.
As a 9-year-old I travelled with my parents from Cheshire to Colwyn Bay to Rydal Prep School. Four other family friends from Runcorn were also fortunate in attending the school at a similar time. Henry Branch (RS 1946-52), Harvey Meggitt (RS 1953-64), Geoff Humphreys Roberts (RS 1958-63), Robin Matthews (RS 1960-65) and of course my brother, Julian (RS 1960- 68).
I can remember vividly the drive up Pwllycrochan Avenue to the imposing and majestic white building which was to become my term time home for four years. At 13 (the then age of transfer) I started at the Senior School, leaving Rydal School in 1966.
I thoroughly enjoyed my time at school, particularly all the sporting activities available. I was taught by some talented teachers, amongst them Frank Pilling, Donald Hughes, Ron Grime, Doc Britton, and Frank Richards.
Friends made in those nine years remain good friends to this day.
At an Alumni event in 1973 I met Anne Richards (RS 1966-68). We married in 1974 and our 3 children, Amy, Richard, and Tom continued the Rydal Penrhos journey for our family, attending Prep and Senior Schools.
In 1970 I took over the running of the Golf Society from Mike Corry (RS 1951-56), handing over to our son Richard in 2021.
From 1996 to 2009 I was the Facilities Manager at school. On retiring from this role, I became the part time, joint secretary of the Rydal Penrhos Society for two years prior to the full-time appointment of Sarah Ritchie.
In September 2014 I was elected President of the Rydal Penrhos Society and again in 2019/20, continuing through to 21/22.
Little did I think in 1957 what a long, happy, and rewarding journey I would have with the now Rydal Penrhos.
Much has changed in the world in the past 65 years but the school essentially remains the same: a good, happy, and secure place to be educated, develop life skills and to reach one’s potential and to make life long friends.
Best wishes and a happy Easter to you all."
