Economics and Business
Where did they go next? A glimpse into the destinations of some of our alumni from the Business/ Economics/ Maths department…
Tom Humphreys (RPS 2008 – 2012)
Tom studied Economics, Art and Geography at A-level and then went to Exeter university to study Politics, Philosophy and Economics (PPE). He followed this with a GAP year and has now become CEO of the company Pollen8 - a "Business Innovation" start-up he founded in 2016.
Here's some info on what they do...
“We are advisors, engineers, strategists and designers focused on people, above all else.
We started running innovation programmes from a two people office in early 2016. Since the beginning we had the aspiration to create a tech-led business that is scalable, rather than being “just” an innovation consultancy.
In the early stages we focused on learning about the challenges of working with large organisations. Year after year, campaign after campaign, we helped them innovate by unlocking the potential of their people, empowering intrapreneurs and building ventures within the organisations. This made us more confident that we understand the requirements for a tech platform, that supports our offering and unlocks more opportunities for growth.
Over time this allowed us to develop a holistic approach for end-to-end innovation by having a value proposition with a unique mix of consulting services paired with our dedicated innovation platform.
Today Pollen8 stands for structure, rigour and elegance in the world of transformational change. Large organisations trust us with their innovation agenda and in return we deliver results that align with their progressive vision. We look back on the projects we were involved in and see a rich variety of solutions that created the kind of impact that aligns with our company values.
We are delighted with the impact our work has had so far, but even more, we are delighted with all the people who allowed us to grow, re-invent ourselves and keep moving forward. We all have expertise at something — but no matter the subject, we believe everyone in the room has something valuable to say.
We’re motivated by people, and the energy we get from one another. We give a damn about the work that we do and we collaborate with creativity and passion to keep making things happen we can be proud of.

Charlotte Rowlands (RPS 2011-2014)
Charlotte studied Journalism, Media and Culture at Cardiff University following her time at Rydal Penrhos. From here she went to HSBC as a Recruitment coordinator, then was promoted to Associate recruiter, and then Vendor recruiter, before heading to EY to become a recruitment advisor. Presently Charlotte is in HR Global People Services at Bloomberg.
Damien Noyes (RS/RPS 1987-1996)
Damien studied A Levels in Business, English Literature and Art and Design at school, alongside paying in the 2nd XV Rugby , 2nd XI cricket and house captain of New House.
Damien left Rydal Penrhos to study at Staffordshire University Business School. He graduated in June 2000 with 2:1 (Hons) in Business Management and has successfully innovated new businesses in various fields since in his home of Turks and Caicos.
After Graduation he moved from the UK back to the Turks and Caicos Islands, Providenciales specifically, where he became a retail store Manager for Sarah's Provo, a Liquor and Beverages supplier and was local distribution rep for the beer brands, Heineken, Amstel Light and Kalik, which is the beer of the Bahamas. So between late 2000 and 2006, he spent a lot of time working with and marketing to the local hotels, bars and restaurants.
In 2004 he started his first business, Screaming Reels Fishing Charters. In early 2006 (to coincide with the opening of the new shipping port, the Grand Turk Cruise Centre) he relocated the business from Providencailes to Grand Turk (his home island). The company then began a five-year contract with Carnival Cruise lines and its affiliated brands to provide fishing excursions. The company grew swiftly from one boat to six vessels and half a dozen employees during those years. In 2011, they took the company back to a private charter model, downsized the number of boats and employees, focused on smaller groups, and gained some efficiencies.
Also in 2011, along with the help of his chef wife, Xiomara, he started a second new business called Salty Dawg Grill - a mobile food cart that could be towed like a trailer and set up in minutes at any location. Local seafood favourites were served to visiting tourists, such as Conch Fritters, Conch Salad, Fried Snapper and Grouper and of course the ever popular Grilled Burgers and Fries. In an effort to increase the number of fishermen that visited and stayed in Grand Turk, late 2012 was the start of another new business venture - Screaming Reels Guesthouse - a studio style vacation rental home, which can be booked for a minimum of three nights or weeks at a time. Its proven to be very popular during the cold US and Canadian winters.
Damien says “2020 has definitely been a challenge for business, especially mine in the Tourism and hospitality sector, hit hard by the effects of Covid-19. My eyes have been opened and there's a good chance that my next great idea will cater to a more resilient local market, immune to the effects of a world-wide pandemic. Something for all young business students to think about!”

Rhodri Mayer (RPS 2011-2013)
After leaving Rydal Penrhos, Rhodri moved to Manchester to read Economics at Manchester Metropolitan University where he graduated with a 2.1 BSc(hons) degree. The degree opened many avenues, and he was fortunate enough to be offered graduate schemes in a range of areas, from Government Economist with the Ministry of Justice to a Wealth Management role in Malta.
He was also offered and accepted a graduate position with Santander UK, based in Manchester. After two years on the scheme in which he was mainly based within the operations teams, he took a permanent role as a Senior Lending Officer.
The role mainly evolved around reviewing facility documentation, ensuring the loans were in line with credit approval and operationally sound whilst completing the loan process against strict deadlines. Since Rhodri felt he has always been a people person he decided that to progress his career he would be best suited to a client-facing role.
Fortunately, a Relationship Manager position within the Real Estate Lending team became available and in February last year, he successfully transitioned into the role in London. As a Real Estate Relationship Manager he is tasked with developing and sustaining relationships with a portfolio of clients alongside his Relationship Director.
As a team, they facilitate lending to Real Estate clients from £20m - £100m and help manage the facility throughout the life of the loan. The last twelve months have particularly been a challenge however he has continued to learn and enjoy the role throughout.

The brewery is still running and growing and being managed mainly by Andre, while Dominic is pursuing a PhD in Innovation Economics at RWTH Aachen in Germany.
Nandan Muthukumar (RPS 2007-2014)
Nandan studied 3 A Levels while at school - Maths, Further Maths and Physics.
He then went to the University of Warwick to do a degree in Physics. Immediately after university Nandan joined Intermediate Capital Group as an intern in the Private Equity Fund Investments team - a small team managing the Enterprise Trust (stock ticker: ICGT), which invests in private equity funds.
His role involved helping to write investment papers, modelling fund performance and monitoring the portfolio. He currently works at Deloitte in the Transaction Services team within Financial Advisory.
His primary work is on acquisitions, helping companies to grow by buying other companies. The work is very varied from looking at due diligence (the worth of the company), value creation (reducing their costs) and project management.
He has worked on a variety of projects from a struggling high street fashion retailer's recovery plan to the merger of multi-billion pound insurance companies.
Simone Vogel (RPS 2010-2012)
After the International Baccalaureate at Rydal Penrhos, Simone went straight to WHU - Otto Beisheim School of Management (Vallendar, Germany) and took a Bachelor's degree in International Business Administration (2012-2015), during which she spent a semester abroad at the Rotterdam School of Management.
After that Simone studied for her Masters at the Technical University of Munich (Germany) in Business Administration / Operation & Supply Chain Management combined with Mechanical Engineering (2015-2018). Subsequently, she started her PhD at WHU at the Chair of Logistics Management.
As part of this, she independently set up a cooperation with MAN Truck & Bus Se, and together they are researching processes to integrate customers more systematically into product development of trucks (2018- 2021). Once completing this PHD at the end of this year Simone hopes to gain employment with MAN Truck & Bus SE.
Alongside all of this studying Simone has had a wealth of work experience - she completed her first internship during her time at Rydal Penrhos at Benteler AG, an international mechanical engineering company and automotive supplier. That was in the area of sales & marketing of glass technology. Her 2nd internship before the Bachelor was at Daimler AG in the area of sales and project management. Her 3rd internship also at Daimler AG was in the area of worldwide transport logistics.
The 4th internship was abroad (condition from WHU) again at Benteler in the area of HR. Her 5th internship was with KPMG AG an auditing company in the area of market analysis automotive industry. And finally, during her Masters she worked at the research institute of Prof. Wildeman for business management, logistics and production.
In addition, she helped a little in her parents' company (freight forwarding) with projects and was involved in associations and student initiatives.
Lewis Barker (RPS 2010-2012)
Lewis Barker was a member of the Rydal Penrhos WRU Academy. He left Rydal Penrhos to pursue his passions for rugby, sciences and sport. He played rugby for the RGC 1404 for three years whilst studying Sport Science at Bangor University.
After completing his degree and achieving a 2:2 Lewis started looking for roles within this sector. He attended multiple job interviews with varied success but one thing that interested him he realised alongside his degree and qualifications was Sales and Business Management. And so when offered a job at a family-run company in Hawarden called Wirral Fospray who provide specialist products to the Aluminium Extrusion industry he thought it might be an interesting prospect.
Initially, he travelled as a salesman throughout Europe visiting clients and extrusion plants learning the ropes; and has since been promoted to the Business Development Manager within the company. 2021 will mark his fifth year at Wirral Fospray.
He has still maintained his love for rugby, and is currently playing at Caldy RFC on the Wirral.
Harris Ajmal (RPS 2008-2012)
Harris studied accounting and finance at the University of Nottingham following his Rydal Penrhos education, working throughout as a waiter and an Uber Eats delivery driver.
Following graduation, he applied to KPMG in Dubai as he always wanted to get some exposure to fast-developing markets and he already knew UAE was one of those with high growth in a short space of time. Luckily he got to the interview stage with KPMG first time which he feels was very fortunate and passed through the aptitude tests and interview stages (a result of late-night efforts, he says).
Having begun his journey in audit at a big 4 he felt like his hard work had paid off “but boy was I wrong it hadn’t even begun!” says Harris.
Harris goes on to say “I enrolled into ICAEW to begin my process to qualify for the ACA and become a chartered accountant. Not doing that great at University (getting a 2:2) I wasn’t eligible for any exemptions so I started from scratch with 15 exams ahead of me.
"Fast forward 2 years and I have 5 exams left, it has been endless late nights due to work commitments, deadlines, and exam revision. Living in Dubai sometimes is the only thing that keeps me sane, alongside my ambition and vision for my future. The progress I have made and will be able to make post qualification seemed impossible if I asked myself when I was in school/college, I did great at Rydal Penrhos gaining 12A’s and 1A* at GCSE’s. But my story didn’t stay consistent there, I’ve always had difficulty in academic situations, I was ill-behaved and uninterested.
"I failed A levels for two years and ended up doing BTEC at a local state college in London, I did Business level 3 and gained a triple Distinction star which is the best grade possible and lead me into a Russell group university which ultimately got me into big4. Everyone has a tough life, but I believe the key is consistency and hard work. I would advise my younger self to be consistent in academic studies as if I did so, then I would be far ahead in my career!
"I have been through tremendous pressure and stress but pressure makes diamonds! All in all, it’s not going to be easy for anyone if you aspire to be great, so be consistent, work hard and never ever give up!”
Mike Farnell says “Thanks go to Harris for his honesty and wisdom when advising our pupils now, we try to explain to our young people that if you put in the work now your journey ahead will be smoother, but the words of someone who has been through it mean so much more. Thank you”
Michael Farquharson (RPS 2001-2008)
Michael started Rydal Penrhos from a very young age in the Prep School and continued all the way through the sixth form and finished with his International Baccalaureate (IB) qualification in 2008. His higher level IB courses were English, Economics, and History.
After school, Michael decided to take a GAP year where he did two stints as a “camp counsellor” at a summer camp in the state of Wisconsin. It was there where he met his wife, who was one of the American staff members at the camp.
During his GAP year, he applied to study for a degree in International Relations at Loughborough University after deciding that History (his original degree choice) was not the path he wanted to go down. He graduated with a first-class bachelor’s degree in 2012, minoring in Economics. After university (and a lengthy visa process) he moved to the U.S. where he started work as a policy analyst at a multinational construction machinery manufacturer — a role that involved maximizing the firm’s profits on service parts sales.
In this role, he learned a lot about corporate supply chains, accounting, finance, and marketing, and was able to learn a lot about business intelligence software and some of the more advanced features of and techniques in MS Excel.
After his role as a pricing analyst, he found employment at another company as a pricing manager, where he was similarly tasked with increasing global revenue and profits at the firm. During this time, his wife was in Law School at the University of Wisconsin - Madison. Upon graduation she was offered a job at a government agency in Washington, DC and Michael decided that he wanted to transition into a career in public policy.
Making such a transition meant that he had to start from the bottom (especially because the DC policy world is very competitive), so upon moving to DC, he started as an intern in the global business and economics department of a large think tank focused on transatlantic relations.
The program gave him insight into the role of think tanks in policy-making and he was able to gain experience researching and writing on various trade and economic policy issues.
After his internship, he got a full-time position at a small left-leaning economic policy organization, where he focused on fiscal policy and financial regulation, as well as some advocacy work. During this time, he was also able to get experience with advocating for and discussing policy options with members of Congress, which was incredibly exciting.
During non-COVID times Washington, DC is home to many events and conferences where you can hear renowned speakers discuss current events and policy challenges, which he attended as part of his daily work.
Michael is currently employed as a policy analyst at the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget (CRFB), an organization focused on educating the public and lawmakers about fiscal sustainability. His daily work involves estimating the effect of legislation on the federal deficit and debt, researching and writing on various other economic and fiscal policy proposals, and currently, crunching the numbers at COVIDMoneyTracker.org, a CRFB project that tracks the federal response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
He is also about halfway through studying for a Master of Science in Applied Economics at the University of Maryland, where he is honing his econometric and economy theory skills, as well as learning how to use statistical programming tools and languages, including Stata and R.
In the future, he hopes to work for a federal government agency, either as an economist, policy analyst, or statistician now that he is an American citizen (a requirement for employment in the federal government).
Elizabeth Akhvledziani (RPS 2012-2014)
After Elizabeth studied the International Baccalaureate in school she applied to universities in the UK and North America to study Economics, as this was the subject she most enjoyed in Rydal Penrhos. After getting offered a scholarship from the University of British Columbia (Vancouver, Canada) to study a Bachelor of International Economics, she got on a plane and moved to Canada.
Elizabeth was always keen on getting as much work experience as possible, as she understood that it helps you both determine the career you want to pursue and makes you more competitive for the job market. This is why she took a part-time job as a sales associate for a female clothing store and stayed there for two years. Most Canadian universities also offer co-op programs, which are similar to placements programs in the UK. In her second year she joined a co-op program which required completing at least 12 months of work experience through internships.
Elizabeth emphasises that the process of applying for those internships was extremely competitive, especially the first time around. Her first internship was at Enterprise Rent-a-Car which she was able to get due to the customer service experience she had gained through her part-time job, and it wasn't at all related to what she was studying.
Most of her duties revolved around keeping one of the branches running, which included serving customers, planning and even washing the cars as well. Despite not being as related to business as she had hoped, this experience actually taught her a lot about management and performing under pressure.
Through the trust she gained with her branch manager, she was often called to be acting manager on his days off and was offered a permanent position once the internship was complete and which she ended up taking and staying in for an additional four months.
After her experience at Enterprise, she was able to secure an 8-month internship as a Financial Analyst for a tech startup in Vancouver called Mobify (recently acquired by Salesforce).
That was her first proper corporate experience and she was focused on helping the company raise its Series A equity round and refinance its debt. After the Series A was raised and her internship was complete, the company also asked her to stay on a part-time basis to help with monthly revenue and cost analysis and board reporting. She ended up taking the offer and staying there until she graduated.
While still working at Mobify, she started thinking of what she wanted to do post-graduation. Elizabeth knew that she really enjoyed corporate finance, but she craved more formal training and experience that she didn't get working for a startup. In the process of working on our Series A, she also got exposed to capital markets which she found fascinating. She decided a career in Investment Banking for a big bank/firm would give her both, the formal training and the exposure to capital markets.
Being in Vancouver and not having prior experience in banking made getting into this already extremely competitive job, near impossible. She took advantage of the fact that she was working in Mobify's downtown office three days per week and attempted to network with almost every professional in M&A or adjacent fields in Vancouver.
She thinks that she probably went on north of 50 coffee chats that summer, no exaggerating. Finally, around December and 4 months before her graduation, a job posting appeared for an Investment Banking Analyst at Deloitte. Having already met a few people at Deloitte, she ended up being referred to the position and securing the offer in Feb 2018 with a start date that May (before she even walked the stage to get her degree).
Her experience at Deloitte was probably the most impactful to her career so far. Her focus was on the execution of sell-side & buy-side mergers and acquisitions for their private clients. That included financing modelling, valuations, building investment summary decks and much more. Most importantly that job gave her both amazing technical and soft skills through working with clients, which set her career on another trajectory. She stayed at Deloitte for almost 2.5 years and was promoted to Senior Associate.
While at Deloitte, she really missed the startup and fast nature of the tech industry. So she got involved with organizing the Deloitte Fast 50 program, which is a prestigious award that selects the 50 fastest growing tech companies in Canada every year. Through that program she was able to meet CEOs and Directors of the coolest technology companies in Canada, which made her start thinking about moving back into tech, which is how she ended up at Square.
Currently at Square she leads Finance & Strategy in Canada. That includes financial forecasting of performance in Canada, which then determines the amount of investment Canada gets from HQ. She also acts as the primary Finance Business Partner to the cross-functional business team in Canada, where she partnes on various strategic projects with heads of Marketing, Sales, Partnerships, Industry Relations and so. As part of taking this position, Square also relocated her to Toronto, so while doing all that, she is exploring a new city as well.
Her job is exactly what she wanted, which is staying in Finance while transitioning back into the super innovative tech industry. She also feels like she is working for a company she truly feels passionate about succeeding because she believes in both their product and their mission. "It is an awesome feeling loving what you do and I recommend to really chase that when considering different careers as a student and later on."
Viktoriya Ulasavets (RPS 2012-2014)
HI all, my name is Viktoriya, myself & my friend Liza moved from Belarus to Colwyn Bay to join Sixth Form at Rydal Penrhos when we were 16. It was a big decision for us and our parents to move countries but we were very excited and looking forward to such an adventure. As soon as we joined the school, we really tried to get involved in everything we could — School Plays, Social Committee, Ski & Tennis teams…
We didn’t take for granted the number of opportunities the school gives you to develop yourself in many areas as this is not the structures the schools have back home. In our last year of school, we had to make a decision regarding the universities. I had Maths & Economics HL and knew these are subjects I wanted to learn more about at the university in the future (although I did have a moment thinking I want to study Engineering instead but everyone has doubts as there are so many opportunities! So just take your time and do your research!).
After getting rejected from Oxford and LSE, I got into the Economics with Management course at Durham University with 38 points in the IB program and those years at Durham were the most fun years of my life! As the time got on I changed my course into an Economics with Business Placement as I felt like there are quite a few opportunities out there post-graduation and I felt like it is very difficult to make a decision without getting some work experience before. So I applied for a few business placements and got an Account Coordinator role in Microsoft. This was a good opportunity to really get a feel for what it is like to be in a professional business setting, get exposure to clients and how to best service them, work in the team and help each other drive towards the same or individual goals. I would highly recommend for everyone to try to get as much work experience as possible during university years whether it is internships, insight programs or a business placement.
My year in Microsoft was beyond helpful also in a way that it helped me understand that although the team was super supportive and the work was interesting, I would want to work in a more demanding, pressurised environment. So I decided to consider other places & started AGAIN applying for other graduation schemes in London… this time in a more finance-oriented environment as we have all heard how tough it is to work for an investment bank, and I was looking forward to a new challenge. After many, many, many applications I got a role in JP Morgan Finance & Business Management scheme which I was very much excited about. I have graduated from Durham with a First Honours and finally started in JP Morgan next year — it was a 3-year program where you get to rotate into a new role each year and also get a chance to do CIMA exam and get CIMA certification by the end of the program, and I felt like it was perfect for me as I will be able to learn about different departments and roles and hopefully get attracted by one of them!
Nevertheless, in my first year of this program, I got to know a few teams in the Markets and got offered the full-time role outside the graduate program as a Salesperson in Credit (Markets). It was something I already had in mind I would want to do post the graduate scheme so I couldn’t be more lucky and grateful for a chance to be offered this role earlier on. I changed the roles and it has now been over 2 years in this new role of mine which challenges me, creates an environment to work under pressure, gave me exposure to working with the clients and helps me learn something new every day! I find it super interesting and motivational and am very much looking forward to what the future holds. My advice here would be to be brave, try new things as only this way you will truly be able to figure out what you want to do in your life. And don’t be afraid of voicing what you want, and what you want to achieve!
You really can’t know after graduation from school or university what exactly you want to do in 5 years time just because there are so many options! But that is exactly why it is so exciting to go meet people, try out different jobs and join different companies and teams to see where you feel more interested to be, what challenges you, what gets you out of your comfort zone every day!
