Across the history of Rydal Penrhos School
Sport is as old as humanity itself. (The oldest sport in the world is thought to be wrestling dating back 15,300 years ago). It has kept societies fit and healthy while building strong communities and boosting morale.
This year with the pandemic changing life as we have known it and the reliance in this modern world on iPhones and laptops, the importance of sports is more relevant than ever.
Competitive physical exercise not only motivates children and adults to get outside and keep fit, but it also instills important values.
For many people, sport is taken for granted. It’s something that exists in the background but isn’t considered particularly valuable. Maybe it’s seen as a bit of fun on the weekend but ultimately, not all that important.
This couldn’t be further from the truth.
Sport matters - Without it, many aspects of modern society will crumble.
Sport matters - From health and happiness to education and society.
Promoting sports, inspiring young athletes, and increasing healthy competition will help individuals and communities to flourish and is something we take very seriously here at Rydal Penrhos.
This year with the restrictions imposed by the Welsh Government as a result of Covid-19 a virtual stop has been put on team sports.
Even when local clubs and societies were able to start re-introducing team sports schools were not released from the restrictions placed upon them.
And so as a school we have had to focus on other challenges this year - individual successes, individual training and the wider health and well being of the school population.
We have put together a little eclectic mix of sporting stories here…some of which reveal to us how sport can create memories, how sport can shape our lives forever, how sport can shape our future lives and careers and how sports make us feel.
We have many sporting heroes who started their sporting life in Rydal Penrhos and we have many current pupils who are just at the start of their journey, some we will mention here and others who we will surely feature in these pages in the future.
Please bear with us if we have not mentioned you, or someone important to you, or someone you are very interested in, we welcome feedback and stories and would love to feature more in the future with your help and assistance.
